Why Should You Eat Alfalfa?

December 1st, 2008    Subscribe To Our Feed

Alfalfa is a herb you may well have heard about and even used but you might not know much about the health benefits it has to offer and research has proven that those who take Alfalfa may be able to lower any glucose or cholesterol in the blood. Alfalfa is a very safe herb to take however it’s been noticed that a very tiny minority of people can suffer symptoms like lupus. In the seeds and sprouts of Alfalfa, amino acid L-canavanine is there and that is what is thought to cause this response. However it’s important to note that leaves are perfectly fine as they don’t contain this amino acid.  Overall Alfalfa is healthy.

Since the sixth century the Chinese have used Alfalfa to relieve fluid retention and swelling. The Arabs were the first to find Alfalfa and they named it “the father of all foods.” The leaves of  the Alfalfa plant are very rich in minerals and nutrients, including carotene, calcium, potassium and magnesium.

Alfalfa is a good diuretic and also a good laxative. It also works well for urinary tract infections, and kidney, bladder and prostrate disorders. A number of studies have been carried out and one of the latest discoveries is that it can help with cholesterol because there are certain agents in Alfalfa that stick to cholesterol which keeps it from remaining in the blood stream.

When it comes to Alfalfa it is something that many people enjoy in their cuisine. It is good in salads and some people eat it as a vegetable all alone.  Eating healthy is also important for natural skin care.

Do you like to drink tea?  You can also drink it as a tea whereby you steep the leaves in some hot water. If you wish you can even spray some of this tea on your plants such as Delphiniums and Irises. By creating a mulch with Alfalfa you will also have very healthy plants.

How Changing Your Diet Can Help With Yeast Infections

November 30th, 2008    Subscribe To Our Feed

There are a number of possible causes of yeast infection. Among the possibilities include using oral contraceptive pills, using oral steroids, about to get your period, being a diabetic, use of applications like soap, douche, hygiene products, and wearing tight, damp, and/or warm clothing. Luckily there are many ways that you can treat the yeast infection. In addition to these treatments, you also need to know the importance of diet.  If you have a symptoms of a yeast infection you really want to deal with it.

When it comes to adhering to a diet for the use of treating a yeast infection you should really call it a detox. Yeast infection is a direct result of an overgrowth in some areas of a natural occurring microorganism, if you want the scientific name then it’s really called Candida albican.  There are many ways you can do a body detox.

One of the basic necessities in diet programs is drinking adequate amounts of water. When detoxing your body it’s very difficult to do this without the help of water. This is because the water helps get rid of toxins that are trapped in your body. In addition to water, drinking fresh fruit juices and even green tea be added to the liquid intake. But emphasis is given to drinking at least eight glasses of water daily.

Eating lots of fresh food is also an important part of the diet. Avoiding foods that have a lot of fat in it is best, not only for your yeast infection but to keep your body healthy on a daily basis. Avoid overcooking your food too. This is because you can kill a lot of the nutrients in your food when heat is applied so be sure to cook your food just right. Steamed and sautéed would be the ideal cooking preparations. Vegetables don’t need cooking, just make it a salad and you’re ready to go. Although in saying that, there are some sweet flavored vegetables which should be avoided such as carrots, corn, potatoes, onions, and sweet potatoes.

Try and eat as much garlic as you can also. Garlic contains antibacterial properties which help in getting rid of the overgrowth of yeast. Be generous with your fresh greens and limit your intake of meat. Fish, beef, lamb, poultry and eggs are okay in moderation.

Antioxidant Foods Video

The term antioxidant refers to a group of compounds found in everyday substances like plants which have health giving benefits to help fight disease. Phytonutrients are an amazing discovery; found in plants they have the ability to work with our body to improve its defense against disease and illness. Although only nine hundred if these phytonutrients have been discovered so far it is the scientist opinion that many more will be found and will change tomorrows health care needs; more are being discovered all the time and the whole area of nutrition, antioxidant foods and preventative health care is opening up.

There have been a huge number of health benefits discovered so far from many well known foods; pomegranates for example, contain many different properties whilst blueberries have compounds which affect the aging process.

Unrecognized for many years, the properties contained in the blueberry are only just now being appreciated with many antioxidant compounds contained in a fruit with very low sugar content. The easiest way to inject concentrated amounts of these fruits is by drinking juice every day; regular consumption can help our circulation and increase our ability to combat illness.

The other properties of antioxidants include the ability to fight disease as well. The old saying about an apple-a-day couldn’t be truer with evidence that they can help prevent the chance of heart conditions occurring.

Now citrus fruits too are showing that they have a use with a number of beneficial phytochemicals contained in them. Tart cherries can also provide anti-inflammatory benefits to people who suffer with conditions that cause pain in and around the joints. Of course these fruits contain large amounts of vitamins B, C and E plus other which are already known to have beneficial effects on our health. Other types of antioxidants are found in mulberries, blackberries and blueberries, called resveratrol, Phytoalexins have anti-viral and anti-fungal properties.

Many people with other aging conditions prevalent around the world, for instance: heart attacks, stroke and Alzheimer’s can all benefit when these compounds are used. The humble tomato has also been under scrutiny with benefits it has guarding against certain cancers and heart problems.

Using tomato puree (which is the concentrated form of tomatoes) as the base for your chili utilizes the antioxidants without the bulk of a whole tomato. Even the humble water melon, so refreshing on a hot summer’s day, has now been found to have some of the most important and powerful phytonutrients available naturally. With all the natural goodness fruit contains and now the health benefits as well, isn’t it time for you to start having more fruit in your diet.

Working To Lower The Chances Of Disease With Power Foods

November 28th, 2008    Subscribe To Our Feed

In the past, mothers used to hold their children down while shoving a spoonful of cod liver oil down the hatch. “You are not leaving this table until every last vegetable is off that plate,” you may recall. Liver was much more common back then and milk with breakfast was a given. Today, there are still many foods that health experts agree are essential to optimal body performance and a balanced diet. The big difference is that many of these rations actually taste great, or at the very least, come in supplement form!

For snackers, texture is a big thing. You love the crunch of a potato chip or the way a chocolate chip cookie just sort of melts in your mouth. The good news is that one of the power foods on our list has just the crunch you need to feel satisfied: almonds! Two ounces or 48 of these tasty nuts will give you 50% of your daily magnesium, which ensures heart health, as well as providing vitamin E, fiber and monosaturated fat, which is the good kind. One study last year found that participants who ate 2.5 ounces of almonds per day lowered their cholesterol significantly after just one month! Other studies suggest a link between almonds and reducing the risk of colon cancer.

If you’ve got a sweet tooth, then you may find that watermelon quenches your need for sugary foods. This juicy “summer day” fruit contains beta-cryptoxanthin, which lowers cholesterol. It also has 20% of your daily Vitamin A and vitamin C, in addition to providing you with an absorbable form of lycopene, which lowers heart disease and cancer risks. Similarly, blueberries are another amazing fruit that has been known to boost dopamine levels and your mood, as well as providing an anti-oxidant toxin-removal service and improving memory/coordination functions.

Perhaps you find that warm foods and drinks make you feel naturally happier. Maybe you’re a reformed coffee junkie. Instead, why not try a cup of tea? Chai tea is a delicious blend of vanilla, cinnamon and comforting spices. Generally black and green teas are the most doctor-recommended for fighting breast, lung and digestive cancers and heart disease. Additionally, a hot cocoa can provide you with antioxidant flavonoids, which fight heart disease and cancer, will reduce toxins in the blood and improve cholesterol ratios.

With most diets, health experts say that fatty foods and alcohol consumption are big no-no’s. You may have to say goodbye to butter, but new research suggests that wine, in moderation, holds benefits for the heart. Red wine is said to be the best, but even white wine contains tyrosol and caffeic acid, which reduces stress, as well as polyphenols. White wine has been specifically linked with improved lung function, while red wine has been linked to everything from lowering LDL cholesterol and lowering blood-clotting agents to inhibiting colon cancer cells and reducing the risk of skin cancer. Danish doctors recommend one glass with dinner weekly or even every evening to give you that magical health boost.

As we get older there are key numbers that begin to weigh heavily upon us. We have to concern ourselves about our blood pressure, weight and our cholesterol level. These are some of the things that most of us have ignored for the vast majority of our lives now suddenly have great importance. However these are some of the thing that should not have been ignored. A lifetime of abuse on the body yields just negative things when left unchecked.

Your cholesterol level is absolutely crucial if you want to stay healthy and your body operating in good order. High levels can lead to heart attacks as well as stroke, both of these things you do not want to have to contend with. Being concerned when it comes to your cholesterol level is not merely for the elderly. It is something both younger people as well as old must worry and be aware of if they want to lead a healthy life. In this article we will go over the fundamentals of cholesterol and hopefully you will understand how important a healthy level is to your body as well as peace of mind.

What is bad cholesterol?

LDL cholesterol is bad. All cholesterol is carried by lipoproteins but the low-density lipoproteins moves in the blood stream and allows the cholesterol to begin to accumulate. If there is too much LDL then the cholesterol begins building up on the walls of the arteries. It begins to form plaque which makes the arteries hard and not as flexible. When clots form and block the artery a heart attack or stroke can occur.

How can you keep from getting high cholesterol?

You can help take steps against having too much LDL cholesterol in your body by exercising, not smoking and eating right. These three things are the primary reasons why people have excessive LDL. Yes, some of your cholesterol levels have to do with family history but doctors have proven time and time again that a diet rich in fish and Omega-3 along with a healthy weight will reduce the overall LDL numbers. The body needs to have plenty of exercise as well.

How is the blockage from the arteries removed?

The initial stage is through medicines however if there is a critical constrictive or occlusion in the artery or blood vessel then a somewhat more invasive operation is called for. The actual procedures may vary but one common method is through a balloon angioplasty. The mechanical device is introduced into the artery and navigated to the closure where the build up of plaque has happened. The balloon is then inflated to clear the passage. Nowadays the operation is minimally invasive and the majority of patients are capable of going home that day.

Does a diet rich in fish really help lower my cholesterol?

You may be surprised but a diet rich in fish, particularly salmon, can help you lower your overall LDL cholesterol while helping raise the HDL cholesterol. It is the omega-3 fatty acids that have been shown to help the body. But do not stop at just salmon. There are other great foods that can help you reduce your LDL’s and raise your HDL’s such as: avocados, garlic, black beans, uncooked soy and even Shitake mushrooms.
